On the tug-of-war between all thought and no action, and finally deciding to just start.

For potentially months I’ve had the same notion. I have SO MUCH going on — what if I just work on everything a little bit every day. And every day, rather than make a plan I get sidetracked.

Today I’m sort of on fire about making a plan.

One of my favorite movies is ‘Waking Life’ — and I’ve obsessed over scenes in this movie for almost 20 years. There’s an extremely on the nose scene where there’s these young guys having a conversation when they see an elderly bum stuck as he’s climbing up a lightpost. This poor bastard is all action and no thought, they think — and we’re all thought and no action.

I think about this constantly and I meander in and out of both without ever finding a happy medium. I go back and forth from extreme overwhelm to relentless, aimless action.

Neither of these things are necessarily horrible — extreme thought and extreme action — but when you have dreams and goals you can’t just lean into one direction.

I can name like 5 people I know that talk and talk and talk about things. They seem like they’re miserable at times, nothing ever changes in their lives. I know other people that are seemingly busting their buns and they seem like they’re never going to make it anywhere in life either — they’re just pouring gas on their life force.

Yesterday I mentioned honesty, and I constantly need to remind myself of this. I need to slow down and really think about what I’m doing. I hate wasting time, but more than likely I’m constantly and consistently wasting time. I get frustrated when people jabber on about things without taking action.

Comedian Duncan Trussell had one of my favorite pieces of advice in regard to how I’m feeling — whenever I want to give someone advice, he says, I don’t do it, and instead I give the same advice to myself.

I’m rambling and being repetitive and constantly quoting the same things and people over and over, so it’s probably time to take my own advice and get a move on.

Cheers to self-examination, and to eating all of your giant elephants one sloppy hot sauce covered bite at a time.

Like Gary Gulman says ‘It only adds up… if you add it up.’

But that’s all that life is.
